A backpack is a functional backpack with several technical specifications. The goal is to be able to transport as much as possible in a clear and safe way and still be able to carry the backpack comfortably. The backpack is used optimally when you use the full back length. This ultimately determines how big the backpack you buy may be. Depending on the size, backpacks often also have chest and or hip straps, larger models often have somewhat wider hip and shoulder straps. This prevents the bag from hanging off the shoulders very much, which could cause you back problems. In addition, backpacks often have many handy compartments so that you can organize the backpack in an orderly fashion and have the items you use a lot within easy reach during your adventure trip.

Not sure yet what kind of backpack you need or what accessories you might need for your trip? Then read this page, where we have listed all the information for you.

What kind of backpack do I need?

There are backpack backpacks with different types of features and sizes. Depending on the purpose of its use, you can choose which backpack is most suitable for you. For extra carrying comfort, you can look for backpacks with wide hip straps, a reinforced back panel and a height-adjustable chest strap.

Maximum backpack size depends largely on your height and what you need/want to carry, but generally the following is a good suggestion to stick to for an average person.

For a 1-2 week trip, we recommend looking at a backpack with a capacity between 45 and 65 liters.
For a trip of 3 weeks or longer, we recommend considering a required capacity of 65 liters and larger.
If you are smaller than 175 then we recommend not going larger than 70 liters, because the backpack will be over your head.

A Flightbag? Is it necessary?

If you check your backpack as luggage for a bus, train or plane trip, it is advisable to put it in a so-called flight bag for protection. This is usually a light bag, slightly larger than the backpack so that the backpack can easily fit into it. In this way the entire backpack is protected from dirt, moisture and tears, also no one can take something out of your backpack or put something in the backpack unnoticed. A flight bag is usually packed in a small, compact lightweight package so will not create excess weight or luggage space.
There are also sturdier flightbags for sale, an advantage is that they are sturdier and can be sealed better, thus providing even more protection by being less likely to tear. However, a disadvantage of a sturdy flight bag is that it usually weighs more than 800 grams and cannot be folded so compactly, giving you extra weight and luggage to carry. Therefore, we only recommend a heavy sturdy flight bag if you do not need to take the flight bag with you during the tour.

Save space with a vacuum bag

During your hike, you obviously want to be able to take as much stuff with you as possible, so any form of space saving is of course very welcome. Vacuum bags offer a good solution for that. With them you can save up to 70% space, especially with thicker clothing or, for example, a blanket or sleeping bag. An additional advantage of using vacuum bags is that by packing your belongings in vacuum bags, you also keep everything clean and dry immediately. If you use small vacuum bags, for example, you can make several small packages of clothing, each time for several days.

Generally backpackers use the Roll-Up Vacuum Bags the most. Roll-up vacuum bags are without a valve and you can vacuum these bags by squeezing the air out by rolling up the bag. Typically the bags will be a little less vacuumable than the vacuum bags with valve, which you vacuum with a vacuum cleaner or vacuum pump.

We also sell small vacuum bags such as a 45x70 cm vacuum bag that can be vacuumed with a vacuum pump. Often these smaller bags are best suited for backpacking. Before you travel you can vacuum the bags with a vacuum cleaner and during the trip you can re-vacuum the bags using a matching vacuum pump. We have put together a special travel vacuum bags package of small vacuum bags along with the vacuum pump.

Other useful accessories

When going on a backpacking trip, a Daypack can come in handy. This is a light, smaller backpack that allows you to travel with lighter luggage in between trips. Some models of backpacks have a zip-off daypack. You use these for hiking, mountain climbing or a short trek, for example.
As mentioned earlier, a Flightbag is indispensable when you check the backpack in as checked baggage. In addition, a Rain Cover for your backpack can be good to bring to protect the backpack from rain. Many backpacks already come with a rain cover, which is then stored underneath.

Other types of backpacks

Is a backpack not quite what you are looking for? We also have plenty of other types of backpacks. For example, one that is more suitable for daily use and can also carry a laptop. There are also backpacks with a trolley system. There is a pull handle built in and the bag has wheels. This allows the bag to be carried on your back as well as being pulled along as a trolley case. This can be useful when the bag is (sometimes) heavily loaded.
